NEWS FLASH: Ladies love “Sex and the City”

By stationwagonreview

The thing I can’t get over is the look on these faces. They’re gleeful. They’re giddy. They’re … like little girls, except they’re not little girls. They’re women. All of them. Some of them are young-ish — maybe 18 — but most are in their 20s, and this opening day showing of the “Sex and the City” movie is obviously one of the most monumental milestones in their lives. I’ve attended my share of opening days — all were of the fanboy sci-fi variety, naturally — but I never witnessed this type of excitement. This was “Lord of the Rings” factored by the “Star Wars” prequels factored by a “Star Trek” spoiler from J.J. Abrams himself. Those nerds dressed as Mace Windu and battled with toy light sabers in the cinema lobby, and after the movie they had a late dinner at Denny’s and went home to their meek apartments and watched episodes IV through VI. These women dressed up to go to a movie in J-town and then, most likely, headed to a bar and ordered Cosmos and humored loathsome guys who weren’t nearly as rich as Big or attractive as Smith or kind as Harry. The nerds, dressed pathetically in stormtrooper gear, let the fantasy go when the credits rolled; I have a sneaky suspicion that many of these women fell asleep tonight thinking that her flawed-but-perfect companion would show up the next day, carrying a box of Manolos just for her!

I keep going back to that look. It’s flirtatious; just like a girl who’s fixated on the blatherings of a desirable sort. It doesn’t matter what he says, she’s going to laugh. And no matter what Carrie, Samantha, Miranda or Charlotte said, these girls laugh. They laugh at the ha-ha funny jokes, the wry jokes, the jokes that aren’t even supposed to be jokes but just came off as funny because, let’s face it, the movie isn’t that great. Is it possible that what really turns women on is a five-years-in-the-making film version of a television show about single women? Did I just write a Carrie question? Oh, shit; I did.
